Get yourself heard

Soon to be known the world over as the happiest place in London, The Pipeline will be bringing a much needed superiority to the missing rock (& roll) scene in the heart of the Eastend.

The Pipeline, the anti-establishment, free for all vibe, is a bar definitely for the lunatic fringe with a very fine taste in music.

The jukebox is the pulse of The Pipeline, when we're open the speakers pound out punk, rock, ska, lo-fi, psychobilly, elvis metal, trash, old-wave and reggae. The following is a partial list of the bands currently featured:

The Clash, ACDC, New York Dolls, Motörhead, The Misfits, The Hellacopters, Black Flag, Mötley Crüe, Ramones, Black Sabbath, The Cramps,
and many more...

The Pipeline is graced with two Pool tables, perfectly positioned to concentrate on the game on hand.

Our current three pinball machines, Tommy, Guns and Roses and Scarred Stiff, rest to the right of the bar and tempt all to turn their hands, or wrists should we say, to become the pinball wizard of our time. One regular client has already achieved some impressive high scores which we feel is hard to be beaten but since we constantly change our machines, there are always opportunities to get your name up in lights.

SWEDISH CRAYFISH PARTY

Book your space now because on Friday 3rd September, The Pipeline will be holding its infamous annual crayfish party. A crayfish party is a traditional summertime eating and drinking celebration in the Nordic countries.

You eat crayfish cold, with your fingers; a rowdy atmosphere prevails amid moisy eating and traditional drinking songs (snapsvisa).

You'll drink beer and iced snaps (Aquavit) and you'll top it all off with silly songs. A night to be remembered (or not), it really does not get more Swedish than this.

Evening includes 1/2kg crayfish, Swedish cheese such as mature Vasterbotten and different pies and quiches, assortment of breads, and of course your first Aquavit.

GBP 25.00 per head.

From 7pm, feast begins 8pm - Limited places, call the bar to book.

Exclusive Live Band from SWEDEN Industri Royal plus support

Coming over from Sweden, to play exclusively at The Pipeline, their only UK gig, Industri Royal is not a regular rock band that can be easily pigeonholed. They live together like hippies, like to dress like dandies but hit the stage with the intensity of punk rockers. The band tries to be epic and minimalistic at the same time, but basically it is all about making killer music, three minute songs where ideas and whims crowd and converge in whatever way they can. Technique is nothing, heart and feeling is everything.

On Stage 9pm

Entrance £10

Comedy Night

Sol Bernstein
Sol Bernstein is the comic creation of Steve Jameson, himself a top comedy performer. The character Sol Bernstein perform a solo show at the Edinburgh Festival 2003 to rave reviews:

"One part Alf Garnett, two parts Mel Brooks and three part like nothing else you have heard. Bernstein is a great new comic creation in the making" The Guardian

"An instantly winning creation" The Independent

It is true, after 25 years of semi retirement, playing nursing homes, Sol Bernstein is back where he belongs, in smoky nightclubs performing to drunks.

The legend that is Sol Bernstein escaped the Pogroms in Russia, the Nazis in Germany and Mosleys blackshirts in London, went on to become the World's 1st all-round entertainer.

He's a song and dance man, a comedian, a magician, an actor, an amazing ventriloquist (with his suitcase friend Mr Pinkus) a Jazz musician (Sol was rated as the BEST TRIANGLE player in the USA in the 50's by performers like Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington ). Also rated the best impersonator EVER !!

He's performed all over the world at venues including The London Palladium, New York's Carnegie Hall, The Paris Olympia, Caesars Palace Las Vegas, The Scunthorpe Baths, but it's
at night clubs where Sol really comes to life. His charisma, his walking stick, his catch phrase "why don't you put on a tie" his chutzpah, put it all together and you see the magic that is Sol Bernstein. He's the man who helped the career's of Elvis Presley. Marcel Marceau (and never even got a "Thank you") and even the Beatles were influenced.

He's worked with, and been friends with, some of the worlds GREATEST performers, Elvis, Judy Garland, The Rat Pack, Lenny Bruce, Jack Benny, George Burns, Milton Berle, Doris Day, Tommy Cooper, Eric Morecambe and Eddie Large. Most young performers will mention Sol B as a major influence. A major influence to do what, we aren't sure, but an influence never the less!

Movie Nights DIG! and Stop Making Sense

DIG! 7pm (107 mins)
Filmed over seven years (1996-2002) and culled from over 1500 hours of footage, DIG! plunges into the underbelly of rock n roll unearthing an amazing true tale of success, self destruction, friendship and the ultimate rivalry between two up and coming bands; Brian Jonestown Massacre led by the tormented, self-destructive genius of Anton Newcombe, and the Dandy Warhols led by a more polished, but admittedly less visionary Courtney Taylor.

DIG! is the story of their loves and obsessions, gigs and recordings, arrests and death threats, uppers and downers, and the delicate balance between art and commerce. As the idealism and destructive tendencies of Jonestown lead to their repeated undoing, the more well adjusted Warhols navigate the corporate sea, trying to maintain their creative edge while starring in mega budget music videos and playing huge arenas.

STOP MAKING SENSE 9pm (88 mins)
Stop Making Sense opens as lead singer David Byrne walks out onto an empty stage holding only an acoustic guitar and a portable cassette tape player. He introduces the first song, Psycho Killer by saying: 'I want to play a tape'. As the show progresses, Byrne is accompanied by the rest of the members of the band as well as some guest performers. Tina Weymouth is the first to appear for the song Heaven. Then Chris Frantz appears for Thank You for Sending Me an Angel and Jerry Harrison for Found a Job. Instruments and equipment are gradually brought onto the bare stage during the first few songs and the entire group is brought together for the band's hit Burning Down the House.

The film offers us a glimpse inside the mind of lead singer David Byrne through the progression of the songs and stage effects. Director Jon Demme's use of wide angle shots to give the viewer a sense of being in the crowd as they are able to view the whole stage and all of the performers at once. The film is a great look at one of the leading bands in the New Wave movement of the late 70s and 80s and is a must see for any fan of Talking Heads.

Movie Nights New York Dolls and The Ramones

NEW YORK DOLLS 7PM (78 mins)
Mild mannered, 55 year old, Arthur Kane endures Los Angeles'bewildering public transportation system each day to and from his job at the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saint's Family History Centre Library. Though a tad frayed at the edges Arthus is neatly dressed in a suit and tie. Thirty years later and a lifetime removed from his former alter ego, 'Killer Kane', the one time statuesque bassist of 70s gender bending, glam rock pioneers, The New York Dolls, Arthur blends effortlessly into his current environment, despite the fact he's speaking to a camera crew who tags along with him on his daily routine.

The Doll's outrageous antics belied a ferocious sound that presaged punk and influenced a generation of musiscians. Establishing the raucous-rocker template, the Dolls' crashed and burned amidst a flurry of drug and alcohol abuse after their aptly titled second LP, Too Much Too Soon. The band broke up in 1975.

RAMONES: END OF THE CENTURY 9pm (108 mins)
In 1974, the New York City music scene was shocked into consciousness by the violently new and raw sound of a band of misfits from Queens called the Ramones. Playing in a seedy Bowery bar to a small group of fellow struggling musicians, the band struck a chord of disharmony that rocked the foundation of the mid-seventies music scene. This quarter of unlikely rock stars travelled across the country and around the world connecting with the dienfranchised everywhere, while sparking a movement that would resonate with two generations if outcasts across the globe.

Although the band never reached the top of the Billboard charts, they managed to endure in the face of fleeting success and crushing interpersonal conflicts by maintaining a rigorous touring schedule for twenty two years. Tracing the history of the band, from its unlikely origins, through its star crossed career, bitter demise and the sad fates of Joey and Dee Dee, End of the Century is a vibrant, candid documentary of one of the most influential groups in the history of rock.

Stand Up Comedy

It's time to laugh again! Sweden's most successful comedian Magnus Betner soon to appear on the Pipeline stage.

In 2005, a pastor's son, Magnus Betner won the annual Swedish Comedian Award.

To date Betner has released 3 DVD's: Live From Nora Brunn; Magnus Betner Uncut and Nothing Is Sacred. A fourth DVD (the first in English) is imminent.

In 2008 Betner's own TV programme 'In Your Face' was broadcast on Channel 5 in Sweden.

His iconoclastic, taboo busting style often gets him compared to legendary American comic Bill Hicks, while they are mighty big boots to fill the quality of Betner's material, and the unflinching, unblinking clarity of thought behind it, makes it hard not to listen to what he has to say.

Betner already has a huge following throughout Scandinavia and now the English speaking world is about to hear from him too. Those of us that know about him already can't wait for the fun to begin.

Kate Smurthwaite - 'Comedy that cuts through the crap' (Three Weeks). Kate has taken three solo shows to the Edinburgh Fringe and performed at several comedy festivals in Britain as well as in Europe and across the US. Kate is the resident compere at the Soho Comedy Club in central London and the host of The Comedy Manifesto, Britain's most popular live topical panel show.

David Whitney is best known for the BAFTA winning
TV series Fonejaker, a high energy mix of satire and filth. 'His trajectory is perfect. He squeezes the laughter out of audiences. He is the squeeze person. (Eddie Izzard)

Rachel Anderson is fast making a name for herself on the stand-up comedy circuit. Demure and charming on first glance, Rachel merrily reels of gags which contradict her vicarage upbringing. Not content with simply talking through the trials and tribulations of life, Rachel often combines her dark observations with her choir-girl like vocals and a harp.

On stage 7pm, £5 on the door.
